Activities on The Isle of Skye
Cycling on Skye - open roads, little traffic and fresh air!
A holiday on Skye will be one to remember for the rest of your life! There are a host of activities catering for all tastes, ages and background. Whether you are an adrenaline addict seeking the thrills of climbing, scrambling and mountain biking or are looking for a more relaxing and peaceful vacation full of history, quality food & drink and culture, Skye has something to offer and the Balloch Guest House with its central location provides an excellent base.
There are superb areas of Skye to go walking. Simple rambles of a few kilometers at Sligachan in the heart of Skye's world famous Cuillin Hills. Or hiking up to the Cuillin Ridge from the same starting point. The choice is yours. Just remember to tell someone where you are going and remember some of these hills are magnetic so your compass might not work properly. Higher up there is very little water so take a bottle with you.
Cycling is also popular on many of the less busy minor road. Endless kilometers of country roads in stunning scenery - down to Elgol perhaps?
Climbing is superb on Skye. Just be prepared and stay safe - tell someone where you are going and when you and your party expect to be back. Go prepared and dont go alone!
Hunting fossils is becoming popular on Skye, also called the Jurassic Isle. A good strarting point is near the Kilt Rock in North Skye in Bearreraig Bay. There are dinosaur footprints at Valtos and Dunans at low tide is also a good place. Link to fossil hunting locations website

Fishing Trips and Pleasure boats are easy to arrange. Wildlife tours are especially popular and whales, seals and other marine life are commonly spotted. There is even a "Glass Bottom Boat" in Kyleakin (just on the Skye side of the Skye Bridge) if you would like to see UNDER the water.
There are so many species of bird on Skye its impossible to list them here - Highlights are Sea Eagle, Gannet, Wheatear, Greylag, Buzzard and so on.. There is a good website called Skye Birds if you are a keen "twitcher" - Skye Birds
